ICGG Secretary Office


On 3-9 June of 2018, the First Latin American Workshop on Geochemical Mapping was held in Bogota, Colombia. The Workshop was jointly organized by the UNESCO International Centre on Global-Scale Geochemistry (ICGG), the Latin American Geoscience Centre of China Geological Survey and the Colombia Geological Survey. Total 138 professionals and scholars from Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Chile and China attended the workshop.

During the workshop, Dr. Wang Xueqiu, the chief scientist of ICGG, delivered a series of lectures, Geochemical Mapping Principle and Methodology, Global Geochemical Baselines and Mapping the Chemical Earth, Geochemical Mapping: Case Histories of Gold and Desert Covered Terrain Exploration, Deep-penetrating Geochemistry for Concealed Deposits, and Soil Geochemical Mapping for Environment and Agriculture. Geochemists from Geological Surveys of Columbia, Brazil, Mexico and Chile presented the geochemical mapping achievements and future plans respectively. The participants also spent a day in the field for sampling practice.

Dr. Oscar Peredes, Director-General of the Columbia Geological Survey, extended his warmest welcome to participants. He thanked the China Geological Survey and the UNESCO International Centre on Global-Scale Geoschemistry for co-organizing the workshop. He expressed his expectations on future cooperation, and as Chairman of the Latin American Geological Survey Association, he would make every effort to promote the implementation of geochemical mapping in Latin American countries and eagerly participate in the International Scientific Cooperation Program “Chemical Earth”.
