ICGG Participated in the UNESCO Regional Strategic Coordination Meeting “Science to Enable and Empower Asia Pacific for SDGs”

Lately, the UNESCO Regional Strategic Coordination Meeting “Science to Enable and Empower Asia Pacific for SDGs” was successfully held in Jakarta, Indonesia, during 29 June- 2 August, 2018. At the invitation of Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO Jakarta Office, the Regional Sciences Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Dr. Hao Guojie, Deputy Director-General of the Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration (IGGE), CAGS, Deputy Director of the UNESCO International Centre on Global-Scale Geochemistry (ICGG), Dr. Yao Wensheng, Secretary Director of the ICGG attended the meeting.

The UNESCO Regional Strategic Coordination Meeting is an important annual meeting for the UNESCO Natural Sciences Centers and the International Cooperation Projects, the theme of this year’s meeting is “Science to Enable and Empower Asia Pacific for SDGs”. Representatives from the UNESCO Natural Sciences Centers and heads of International Projects were invited to attend the meeting and discuss on the scientific plans for sustainable development of the Asian Pacific Area.

The ICGG representatives participated in a number of multi-lateral seminars on “Geoscience to Enable and Empower Asia Pacific for SDGs” and carried out exchanges with heads of the Division of Ecology and Geosciences of UNESCO and the Regional Sciences Bureau for Asia and the Pacific. The ICGG staff vividly explained the significant role the ICGG had played in sustaining development and had earned extensive support from the participants for the global-scale geochemistry research in the Asia Pacific region. The exchanges had gained wide recognition on the importance of global-scale geochemistry to the sustainable development goals. Many participants showed interests in cooperating with the ICGG in its Asia Pacific projects.

During the meeting, the ICGG representatives also learned from other authoritative UNESCO organizations on UNESCO Research funding, organization and operation of International Cooperation Projects, etc.
