Dr. Wang Xueqiu Awarded the Gold Medal by the Association of Applied Geochemists (AAG)
Dr. Wang Xueqiu has long been deeply engaged in applied geochemistry research and has achieved a series of original innovation outcomes. Firstly, he discovered the migration mechanism of gold nanoparticles, providing an empirical theoretical model for geochemical exploration for gold deposits in covered areas worldwide. Technologies developed based on this theory have been successfully popularized and applied in alpine grassland, desert and gobi covered areas across China, leading to the discovery of a number of new gold deposits. Such technologies have also been adopted by Canada and Nordic countries for geochemical mapping in till-covered terrains. Secondly, he organized and carried out geochemical mapping covering all 16 rare-earth elements for the first time, and put forward quantitative prospecting evaluation criteria for ion-adsorption medium-heavy rare-earth deposits, which facilitated the discovery of super-large-scale medium-heavy rare earth deposits in the Honghe area of Yunnan Province. Thirdly, he initiated the international big-science program “Chemical Earth”, expanding geochemical mapping from national to global scale. He addressed the challenge of sampling representativeness in arid desert regions, which account for one-third of global land area, and established a geochemical baselines network covering 35 % of the global landmass. In addition, he has published more than 300 papers in key domestic and international academic journals and supervised 26 PhD students.
The AAG Gold Medal represents the highest international honour in the field of applied geochemistry. It recognizes distinguished scientists who have made major contributions to exploration geochemistry and related disciplines, and who have advanced knowledge dissemination and academic exchanges of this field across the globe.
