UNESCO International Centre on Global-Scale Geochemistry Successfully Held the 2026 International Workshop on Geochemical Mapping
Centered on geochemical mapping, the workshop adopted a diversified teaching framework integrating academic symposiums, thematic seminars, indoor lectures, field excursions, sampling demonstrations and site visits. To begin with, all the participants attended the 31st International Applied Geochemistry Symposium (IAGS 2026) in Beijing, where they listened to keynote presentations and joined the Seminar on the "Chemical Earth" International Big Science Program. The lectures in Langfang were delivered by around ten senior scholars from ICGG and invited international experts, covering theories and methodologies for global-scale geochemical mapping, analytical techniques for 76 elements in geochemical samples, operations of the "Chemical Earth" Big Data Platform and geochemical mapping software, mapping program in Sweden ensuring the quality and traceability of the geochemical data, applications of geochemical data in bedrock mapping and exploration, as well as the concept of hotspot analysis and its significance in geochemical studies. The last part of the workshop was a field-sampling demonstration at the Chaobai River in Tianjin, allowing participants to gain first-hand insights into field workflows for geochemical mapping. During the workshop, the participants also visited the ICGG Global Baselines Sampling Bank, Laboratory and Certified Reference Material Development Centre for on-site observation and exchange.
From high-level academic sessions in Beijing to systematic lectures in Langfang and on-site field practice in Tianjin, participants acquired technical competencies ranging from sample collection and laboratory analysis to data mapping and comprehensive interpretation. The knowledge gained will enable them to apply these techniques to mineral resource exploration, ecological environmental protection and green agriculture surveys in their home countries, facilitating the implementation of the "Chemical Earth" International Big Science Program in more countries.
The successful delivery of this workshop offers a valuable exchange platform for geochemical professionals worldwide and further demonstrates ICGG's role in advancing the standardization and internationalization of global geochemical mapping. It has effectively fostered global geochemical capacity building and technology outreach, deepened multilateral collaboration under the "Chemical Earth" International Big Science Program, and contributed geochemical insights to the sustainable development of global resources and the protection of the ecological environment.
