Launched by the United Nations General Assembly in August 2023 and implemented under the lead of UNESCO, the “Science Decade” initiative aims to strengthen the core role of science in advancing the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The initiative comprises three tiers: Programs, Projects and Activities. As the highest-tier long-term strategic initiative, Programs serve as a key vehicle for advancing global scientific cooperation and systemic transformation.
Built on the international big science program “Chemical Earth”, the program deeply integrates artificial intelligence technologies to develop an open, inclusive and intelligent global geochemical data platform. It will develop AI-powered tools for data integration, analysis and prediction, providing scientific decision-making support for global issues including climate change response, soil health preservation and the sustainable utilization of mineral resources. Focusing on developing countries, the program will strengthen the scientific and technological capacity building of relevant nations, promote gender equality in science, and facilitate the translation of scientific outcomes into public policies through establishing regional data hubs, delivering systematic technical training, and advancing global scientific collaboration.
This successful shortlisting marks a new milestone for IGGE in the field of global geochemical intelligence. Moving forward, the institute will bolster the sustainable development of developing countries through pragmatic scientific and technological cooperation, contributing wisdom and solutions to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
