Joint meeting of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the IUGS Commission on Global Geochemical Baselines and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of EuroGeoSurveys Geochemistry Expert Group was held in Vienna, Austria, from 20th to 22th April, 2017. Geochemists from a number of European geological surveys, as well as experts from across the world attended the meeting. Dr. Wang Xueqiu, on behalf of the International Center on Global-Scale Geochemistry and the IUGS Commission on Global Geochemical Baselines, also attended the meeting.


Together 39 geochemists from Norway, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Finland, Austria, Sweden, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Portugal, Hungary, Italy, Germany, Namibia, China, Chile, Denmark, Slovakia, Serbia, Russia and Australia, etc. attended the meeting. At the meeting, experts from all countries exchanged and shared the progress of the European and Global Geochemical Baselines Project and their application to environment, resources, agriculture and health; discussed the future development directions of global geochemical research; the possibility of establishing working groups of Commission on Global Geochemical Baselines for all continents and major regions; explored ways to build the international cooperation network of UNESCO International Center on Global-Scale Geochemistry and strengthen its connection with relevant international organizations, such as IUGS- CGGB and EGS-GEG; further defined the relationship between the international big science project “Chemical Earth” and Global Geochemical Baselines Project.


The UNESCO International Center on Global-Scale Geochemistry (ICGG) was officially established on 12th May, 2016. This visit to Vienna was of great importance to publicize the ICGG; strengthen its links with relevant European organizations; promote the construction of ICGG’s international cooperation network and push forward the implementation of the international big science project “Chemical Earth”.
